What is fill dirt?
Fill dirt is the subsoil found below the topsoil layer. It has little or no organic matter — and that is exactly why it is useful. Organic soil breaks down and settles over time; fill dirt holds its shape, so it is the right material for raising grade, building house pads and filling holes where something will sit on top.
Fill dirt vs. topsoil
Use fill dirt to build up and shape the ground, and topsoil only for the top 4–6" where grass or plants will grow. Using topsoil as fill is a common mistake — it costs more and settles.

How much fill dirt do I need?
Measure the area and the average depth to fill, then length × width × depth ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Add 15–25% for compaction when building a pad. The calculator handles the math.
Is fill dirt good for growing grass?
Not on its own — cap it with 4–6" of screened topsoil.
Can you spread and compact the dirt?
Yes. Our crews can build and compact pads and finish-grade the site. See grading services.
