Beton Block Retaining Walls in Central Alabama

Large concrete block retaining walls that hold back hillsides, level yards and carry driveways – built start to finish by one crew. We cut the slope, set the blocks with our own excavators, add drainage stone and compacted backfill, and finish-grade the site.

Why large concrete blocks

A concrete block retaining wall is a gravity wall: oversized precast blocks, stacked and interlocked, hold the soil back by their own weight – no mortar and no wooden ties to rot. The stone-face finish looks like cut rock, and once the backfill is compacted the ground above can carry a lawn, a gravel drive or a parking area. On a steep lot it is often the only practical way to gain flat, usable ground.

How we build a block retaining wall

Every wall starts below ground. We cut the slope, dig and level the footing and lay a compacted stone base so the first course sits dead level. The blocks are set course by course with our excavators. Clean drainage stone goes in behind the wall so water can escape instead of pushing on it, and the backfill is placed and compacted in lifts. We finish with final grading, straw and seed, or a gravel drive or pad on top.

Where block walls make sense

  • Driveways and access roads cut into a hillside
  • Level backyards and lawns on sloped lots
  • House pads and building sites that need flat ground
  • Slopes that erode or wash onto a road or a neighbor's lot
  • Commercial lots, parking areas and subdivision entrances

One crew from excavation to final grade

Because we excavate, haul and deliver material ourselves, your wall does not wait on three different contractors. The dirt we cut, the base stone, the drainage stone and the topsoil all move on our own trucks, and the crew that sets the blocks also grades the site and leaves it clean. We build retaining walls across Shelby, Jefferson, Chilton and Bibb counties – call (205) 506-5000 and Cliff will come look at your slope.

How it works

    Call Cliff

Call (205) 506-5000 and tell us about the slope – how long and how high the wall needs to be, and what it will hold.

  2. 2

    Site visit & quote

We walk the site, look at the soil, drainage and access, and give you a straight quote and a realistic timeline.

  3. 3

Excavation, blocks, drainage, backfill and final grade – one crew with our own equipment and trucks, and a clean site at the end.

FAQ

Beton Retaining Walls FAQ

How tall can a concrete block retaining wall be?

It depends on the block size, the soil and what sits above the wall – a driveway or a building puts far more load on it than a lawn. Large gravity blocks can go much higher than small landscape blocks, but taller walls and walls that carry traffic usually need an engineered design. We talk it through on the site visit.

Why does a retaining wall need drainage?

Water trapped behind a wall adds pressure and is the most common reason walls lean or fail. Clean #57 drainage stone behind the blocks lets water get out, and the top of the wall is graded so runoff is carried away from it.

Is a block wall better than poured concrete or timber?

Timber walls rot and last only a fraction as long. Poured concrete needs forms, rebar and curing time. Large concrete blocks go up quickly without mortar, hold the soil back by their own weight, and can be stepped or curved to follow the ground.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

It depends on the wall height and on your city or county – taller walls and walls near roads, property lines or buildings often need a permit or an engineer. Check with your local building department before the work starts; we are happy to talk through what your project involves.

Do you haul the dirt away and bring the stone?

Yes. We haul off the excavated soil or reuse it on site when it is suitable, and bring the base stone, drainage stone, fill dirt and topsoil on our own trucks.
